PROJECT:  ATLANTA PUBLIC SCHOOLS WEBSITE REDESIGN

ROLES SERVED: WEB DESIGNER/PROJECT MANAGER

PROBLEM:  In 2007 Atlanta Public Schools pressed for a redesign of their public-facing website.  The website redesign also required a strategic communication strategy to leverage "new" technologies that were available at that time.

DISCOVERY:  Extensive research led our team to choose School Wires, now BlackBoard, as the best-fitting CMS to develop and mange a custom templated website communication platform.  The analysis required community feedback and requirements gathering from stakeholders: school board members, district leadership, parents, and students.  Several changes in policy, leadership, and budget would present significant delays and are illustrated in the versions of the Atlanta Public Schools website over nearly 2 decades.
While my role within the district shifted over the course of time, I was fortunate to always serve as the lead designer during transitional periods.

STRATEGY:  A change in district leadership required a quickly designed transitional site.  At this time, all school websites were independently hosted and updated via ftp.  The transitional site was designed using a schema similar to school district websites of the same period.  The above wireframe illustrates the initial approved design change from the original design from the 1990's.

IMPLEMENTATION OF REDESIGN IN CMS:  In 2010 my team implemented the first CMS, Schoolwires (now Blackboard.). At the time, district strategy sought a rebranding campaign, and only mild modifications to the public-facing communication platforms.

IMPLEMENTATION OF REDESIGN IN CMS:  2015 saw a major redesign of the Atlanta Public Schools website, cementing it as the official communication platform for the district.  My work was to research, design, test, and implement the latest version of the website, which is still in use today.
